Champaca Bangalore

For Radhika Timbadia, a former qualified ecologist who worked in the field of sustainability for 10 years, Champaca, her cafe, has been an effort to bring to the fore a different experience around books, through food, curation, and building a strong community.

Champaca Bangalore

Champaca is a bookstore in the heart of Bengaluru & a community of readers, with diverse stories. They experienced the world differently as they have read the stories which have been their motivation. They believe that good books need good shelves which hold a world of voices and stories, from across time, place, and experience. Champaca love nature writing, science, reflections across genre on gender and caste and history. They have a wide variety of genres. They are an independently owned bookstore and cafe dominated by women, with a diverse group of individuals. They work together to pick and purchase the books they store and to coordinate the most important day-to-day processes of operating the store. Champaca children's library is now a small room for everyone and they run weekly lessons at a small school in Pottery Town through its work. They plan to expand it into a wider shared space that is open to more kids in the area.

Every week they hold activities that are both online and offline, which is free and publicly accessible. They want to offer a lot of activities to the city, and support authors, artists, and people to promote independent and artistic work. They host a series of homegrown discussions on texts that are important to our present moment. We're showcasing independent films and music and holding seminars on a range of subjects.

''The secret to a well-balanced life is a cup of tea in one hand and a good book in the other.”
