History of IKEA

IKEA is a home furnishings retailer that was the world's largest seller of furniture in the early twenty-first century, with over 300 stores worldwide. IKEA specialises in low-cost items that are sold in compact "flat-pack" form for in-home assembly by the customer.

IKEA Establishment

IKEA was first founded in Sweden in 1943 and proudly displays its Swedish roots. The exteriors of the stores are decorated in the colours of the Swedish flag, in-store restaurants serve Swedish food, and the company's products bear Swedish names. The headquarters is situated in the Netherlands.Ingvar Kamprad, whose paternal grandparents were German-speaking immigrants to the southern Swedish province of Smaland, was an early trader. At the age of 17, he founded the company, combining his initials and the initial letters of his family's farm (Elmtaryd) and his home village (Agunnaryd). Initially, he sold various small items such as pens and lighters. He began selling furniture in 1948 and published the first annual IKEA catalog in 1951. In 1953, he opened a showroom in the town of lmhult where customers could look at display systems and make purchases. In 1958, the first retail store opened in lmhult.

IKEA is not a publicly-traded company. It is instead managed by a collection of operating companies, holding companies, and nonprofit foundations. The complicated corporate structure was developed in part in response to Sweden's high taxation.
