Sula Vineyards- Bangalore
Rajeev Samant, the founder of Sula Vineyards.

Founder and Sula Beginning

Rajeev Samant first became acquainted with wines while studying at Stanford University and working at Oracle in California; but, when he returned to India in the early 1990s, neither grapes nor wine was on his mind. In 1994, an accidental visit to his family's estate in Nashik, a location well-known for cultivating table grapes, planted the germ of an idea, and before long, he was investigating the notion of growing wine grapes in Nashik. With his curiosity sparked, Rajeev spent three months at a tiny vineyard in California owned by his friend and mentor, Kerry Damskey, who is now Sula's Master Winemaker.

Being on the front lines of wine production provided him an inside insight into the world of wines, and in 1999, Rajeev founded Sula Vineyards, which was followed by over 35 more wineries throughout India over the next decade. The name "Sula" was derived from his mother's name, "Sulabha," and represented the rich Indian history of his wines. This was a wine that was proud of its Indian heritage since it was the first firm in the country to utilise an Indian logo. Rajeev Samant, who has been deeply impacted by his travels and personal convictions, is a staunch believer in being a good steward of the planet and in sustainable business operations. Under his leadership, Sula has become one of India's most environmentally friendly businesses, with a significant portion of its resources devoted to sustainable winemaking practises and sustainable vineyards, ensuring appropriate livelihoods for Sula's community of farmers across Maharashtra and Karnataka. Rajeev is also a prominent champion for India's wine sector, and he is frequently sought out to defend the interests of India's wine growers and farmers to national and state governments.
