Karnataka's oldest city- 'Banavasi'

Banavasi said to be the state's oldest town, has been the seat of power of the Kadamba dynasty since the 4th century AD. Under different kingdoms, the city has seen many names over the years, as documented by famous travellers such as Ptolemy, Huen Tsang, Kalidasa, and Chamarasa. A quaint illustration of lush green paddy fields and free-flowing waterfalls, filled with temples and ruins of old architecture, is the untouched town on the banks of Varadha.

The Madhukeshwara temple, founded by the Kadamba king, Mayur Sharma, which features the honey-colored shiva lingam for which it is called, is among the major attractions in this age-old area. Originally a temple for Madhava or Vishnu, it has seen many additions to the architecture styles of Hoysala, Chalukya, Sonda, and Vijayanagar. In the intricately carved stone walls and pillars, the temple exposes its history, with a stunning Nandi statue, a Nritya Mandapa, and a Trilok Mandapa. In the fine details of the ornate carvings, the abilities of the artisans are clear.

In the ruins at Gudnapur or the temples at Balligavi, other after-images of the long-gone kingdom can be seen. Archaeological marvels, such as 4th-century copper coins and even an intricately engraved inscription detailing the reign of the Kadamba dynasty, have been churned out by the ruins of the ancient city. In the monsoon, you will travel out here to see the green lake visible from the former village. In all directions, the green paddy fields paint a calming picture. Try the khaanavalis or small eateries lining the roads that sell rice, jowar, and cornbread with pickles and vegetables if you're looking for local food delights. Or slice into the delicious pineapples that are locally grown.
